Residential Care

Residential care is a way of caring for children and young people who cannot live in their own family homes for whatever reason.  Within residential care they live with other similar young people in a house and are looked after by experienced carers 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Children and young people move into residential care for a variety of reasons such as:

  • There are no available foster carers
  • They have already been placed with a foster carer but this has not worked out for them
  • They are unsuited to being placed with a foster carer
  • It is the young adult's preference to live in a residential care home

In Guernsey there are a variety of residential care homes from a traditional unit to other more bespoke homes.

"Building relationships, establishing a basic routine and encouraging these young people to access education or an alternative is what being a residential child carer is all about. A lot of these children just want someone to care about them."
