Residential care is a way of caring for children and young
people who cannot live in their own family homes for whatever
reason. Within residential care they live with other similar
young people in a house and are looked after by experienced carers
24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Children and young people move into residential care for a
variety of reasons such as:
- There are no available foster carers
- They have already been placed with a foster carer but this has
not worked out for them
- They are unsuited to being placed with a foster carer
- It is the young adult's preference to live in a residential
In Guernsey there are a variety of residential care homes from a
traditional unit to other more bespoke homes.
